CHARTING OUR FUTURE 2020-2023

Last year we carried out some long-term strategy work which identified reaching more New Zealanders and optimising our current delivery as key strategic goals. Following that work, a group of ten staff came together over lockdown to further rationalise our strategic vision for the next 3 years.

This group represented management, complemented by an instructor perspective with the addition of Dave Taylor. Dave brings a wealth of life experience and a deep connection to Te Ao Māori. The strategy sessions were facilitated by Adam Cooper of Creative Leadership, who also works with Outward Bound as a facilitator for our professional courses.

Two key additional strategic goals that came out of these facilitated sessions include a focus on Education for Sustainability (EfS) and a commitment to actively grow our engagement with Te Tiriti o Waitangi.

The group also identified three key pillars – Tāngata/People, Turangawaewae/Where we stand, and Tikanga/Process – with which to shape our strategic direction.

Like many organisations post-COVID, we have taken advantage of a “pause” in normal operations to re-imagine how we can best serve the needs of our students and stakeholders, while ensuring we remain an engaging and sustainable place to work.

The following represents the current version of the work to date. School Director Simon Graney is working with our Māori cultural advisors to refine the application of te reo. The incoming CEO, once appointed, will also be integral to signing off on this piece of work.

OBNZ leads the way in outdoor education in Aotearoa New Zealand. We combine personal and social development, with education for sustainability. We work with a diversity of partners to provide a wide range of innovative programmes across the country. OBNZ is financially viable and optimises its resources.
